Music

During 'Come Home' by Placebo I thought my MP3 player had cut out.  It just switched off and wouldn't switch back on again.  I thought "this is it, 4 years service and it conks out.  Oh well, thanks for the memories..." but when I got it home and plugged it into the mains charger it came back to life, so probably just a battery issue.

It never fails to surprise me how many people are...er..surprised at my Zen Xtra.  Even though it's only 4 years old, it is regularly described as "retro" and demonstrates how rapidly technology moves.  It is a contemporary of the original iPod Mini (although a few months older, as I remember Mike having a lot of trouble getting hold of an iPod Mini while my Zen came straight from Ebuyer and issues such as the crappy headphone socket had been fixed) and as such has a black and white dot matrix screen and a few buttons on either side.  And it is a music player.  It doesn't have a notepad, contact directory, games...and as I say, that's all great if you want those facilities, but if you just want to stick something into your pocket and listen to music it's ideal.  One thing that bothers me slightly is that when it does break down I don't think there will be many options for a replacement.  Apple sell high-capacity iPods, but they seem to be the only company.  It looks like I could end up with an iPod in the future.  That wouldn't be a bad thing - they're lovely, stylish pieces of kit and do what they do (i.e. just about everything) very well.  Maybe I'd be better with trying to find a PDA with high capacity storage, which I think is more likely in the days of high capacity solid-state memory.

I started this listening project on 18 January 2008.  Over 37 days I have listened to roughly 920 of 5030 songs.  If I maintain this rate I should complete in 165 days time, which means I should finish off around August time.  So I should get it done quite comfortably by the end of the year...and hopefully before the machine dies.

My old Zen used to freeze during songs requiring the reset button to be pressed (fun when on the train and you don't have a paperclip).
Quite happy with the Zune80 (but then again I did my a HD-DVD drive so I wouldn't go by my choices) I replaced it with, at least it doesn't sulk when I don't use it for 24hrs. I'm not sure why the large capacity mp3 players seem to be disappearing I quite like carry all my music with me as it saves me making a choice about what I want to carry.

If the battery goes you should be able to get a replacement (http://search.ebay.co.uk/search/search.dll?sofocus=bs&sbrftog=1&dfsp=32&catref=C6&from=R10&satitle=zen+battery+Xtra&sacat=-1%26catref%3DC6&sargn=-1%26saslc%3D3&sadis=200&fpos=Postcode&sabfmts=1&saobfmts=insif&ga10244=10425&ftrt=1&ftrv=1&saprclo=&saprchi=&fsop=32%26fsoo%3D2)

High capacity solid-state memory is very expensive.

HD-DVD. Oops.

Memory: It's expensive at the moment, but it's likely to be coming down in price in the coming months, as these things do...

I have one of those Zen's and everyone makes fun of me for it! It plays music well, so what if it's not all sleek and small? Grr
